Description
Sun Conures are probably the most well-known of all the Conures. Their bright colors are very eye-catching, and they tend to have very affectionate personalities as well. Their feathers are so brightly colored that it looks as if they’ve just walked through a rainbow! The majority of a Sun Conure is bright yellow or orange. Babies will be mostly green, but molt these feathers as they age and begin to gradually change color. Their flight feathers, however, will always remain green. Their cheeks are usually bright orange, and their flight feathers are blue. Their tails tend to be a variety of colors, changing from yellow to blue to green all at once. Average Lifespan: 15 – 20 years
Sexing: Sexing these birds requires a DNA test, as they are not sexually dimorphic and you cannot tell the sex just by looking at them.
Origin: South America (Specifically, Brazil and Venezuela)
Trainability: Domestic hand-fed babies make excellent pets. Sun Conures are very affectionate parrots, and really enjoy spending time with their caretakers. They are playful and outgoing, and most are very intelligent. They are not known for being good talkers, though a few will learn a word or two. They will often pick up on key words that get them what they want, such as the name of a favorite food or person, but we do not offer them as birds that can speak.
Loudness: Sun Conures are usually very loud birds, and we don’t usually recommend them for apartment living. They have a very distinct call that, in nature, is used to help birds find one another in the jungle. Obviously, the call needs to be loud in order to be heard over all the other ruckus. If you are sensitive to noise, or have nosey neighbors who are, we would suggest looking at other species.
