The huia bird, a species tragically extinct since the early 20th century, holds immense cultural and historical significance in New Zealand. As such, its feathers are considered taonga (treasured possessions) by Māori and are highly protected.
The sale of huia feathers is strictly illegal under New Zealand law, stemming from both conservation efforts and respect for Māori cultural heritage. Any offering of huia feathers for sale is almost certainly illicit, likely involving theft from museum collections or gravesites, and fuels a black market that further disrespects the bird’s memory and Māori customs.
Possessing, let alone attempting to sell, a huia feather can result in significant fines and legal repercussions.
